Enchanting Arusha Mountain Village and Waterfalls Hike

About this experience

Step into the picturesque foothills of Mount Meru, where banana groves give way to organic farms and food forests, and everyday Tanzanian life unfolds at the pace of footsteps.

Walk ancient paths through local communities, past terraced hillsides and small family farms, before descending to a pristine three-tier waterfall with natural swimming pools, a place our families have cherished for generations. Along the way, visit a homestead where cow manure becomes cooking methane and organic fertilizer, a quiet testament to the innovation that sustains mountain life.

We welcome you to our family estate to sample exotic local spices and one of the world's rarest honeys, a golden treasure found nowhere else. A private, unhurried journey, with a bean-to-cup coffee experience and lunch buffet available as optional additions should you wish to linger.

This is an invitation into our real lives, shared with only a handful of guests.

Itinerary and highlights

Ancient Mountain Village Hike: Perched just 15 minutes above Arusha is a picturesque mountain village few tourists ever find. Your hiking journey begins here, winding through rolling foothills that reveal sweeping views of Mount Meru's forested slopes.

Follow ancient trails that weave through banana groves, organic farms, and bubbling streams—each turn offering a new vista of the valley below. The path takes you through food forests where local families grow everything they need, past community gathering spaces, and alongside traditional irrigation channels that have watered these hills for centuries.

As you walk, your host shares insights into tribal traditions, wild herbal remedies, and a way of life that has endured for over 300 years. This is not a rushed walk—it is a conversation, a slow immersion into a landscape that feels timeless.

Homestead Biogas Visit: Along the trail, we stop at a family homestead. Here, you will see how we turn cow manure into cooking methane for our kitchen and organic fertilizer for our crops. It is a simple system, born of necessity and ingenuity, one that keeps us self-sufficient and deeply connected to the land.

Hidden Three-Tier Waterfall: The next chapter of your hike leads you to one of the mountain's most enchanting hidden pockets. A scenic descent through lush vegetation brings you to an ancient three-tier waterfall, a sacred place cherished by our community for generations. Quiet, secluded, and far removed from crowded tourist routes, this is a true hidden gem.

There are three distinct waterfall cascades, each feeding into natural rock pools of cool mountain water, offering the perfect opportunity for a refreshing swim. Take your time here. Soak in the sound of falling water, the cool mist on your skin, and the profound stillness of a place that feels untouched by time.

Exotic Spice Tasting: As you emerge from the waterfall path, a local family welcomes you into their home to sample a selection of exotic local spices, including Tanzanian cocoa and banana wine. Then, taste something truly extraordinary, one of the rarest honeys in the world. Produced by stingless bees native to this region, this golden treasure has been used for generations not only as food but as a healing remedy for wounds, sore throats, and digestive ailments. Its flavor is unlike anything you've ever experienced, floral, tangy, and unforgettable.

Optional Heirloom Bean-to-Cup Coffee Experience: Visit a small family coffee farm planted over 100 years ago, now producing the region's best heirloom Meru Mountain coffee.

An artisan guides you through each step of the process... harvesting, roasting over an open fire, grinding, and brewing. Then, enjoy the coffee you make together. The experience is interactive, personal, and unrushed, accompanied by local songs and laughter.

Optional Farm-to-Table Lunch – Savor a generous meal prepared by women from the community, featuring traditional Meru dishes like banana stew, fresh vegetables, mchicha, coconut rice, and seasonal fruit. Vegetarian and vegan options available.
